Tools: Articulate Storyline 360 and Audacity

Client: IDOL Academy Cohort

Challenge:

IDOL Academy participants requested help managing the number of tabs required to complete instructional design projects. They needed a free method of saving and organizing tabs for works-in-progress that could easily integrate into their workflow.

Solution:

Using Cathy Moore's Action Mapping, I determined that their needs were best met by providing a tool to manage the problem. The course was developed using storytelling, rather than a traditional software tutorial. By making it interactive, I worked to move learners into an active learner role. While I did provide opportunities for users to self-assess their thoughts and reactions, I intentionally did not make these branching scenarios. The tutorial is short, to respect users' time constraints, and includes elements of whimsy to increase engagement, since this was an optional training.

Results:

Participants were surveyed after course completion to indicate whether they felt prepared to use OneTab (100% of users responded yes) and if they intended to immediately begin use of the Google Chrome Extension in their workflow (50% of users responded yes). This course did not gather data for Kirkpatrick levels 3 or 4, to measure behavior changes over time and the corresponding performance results.

Tools: Biteable.com vs. Storyline 360 + Audacity

Client: Garuna Foundation

Collaborator: Subject Matter Experts from the Garuna Foundation

Challenge:

The Garuna Foundation is a non-profit organization that builds and manages schools in rural Cambodia. Stakeholders identified a need for staff training to correspond with their Garuna Bible curriculum. Local Cambodian staff members have limited internet and are spread throughout the rural countryside. Their training needs to be easy to access on a cell phone.

Solution:

Rather than developing a course for all staff to complete within the same window of time, this course is developed as a campaign of just-in-time content delivered over a period of time, allowing staff to implement what they have learned in stages.

The Biteable video was developed as one of two prototypes for this course, to present deliverable content at the smallest price point. The needs assessment established that staff members were at a basic skills level and needed essential methods for learner engagement. This prototype presented the content in English, for stakeholder review, but would use Khmer translations during implementation.

A second prototype was presented as a Storyline course, using the same script delivered through English narration with Khmer captions. The second prototype provided a more customizable experience but at a higher price point. The stakeholder ultimately chose the Storyline course offering, to address their long-term staff development goals and allow for future rollout to other countries using this curriculum.

Results:

The launch of this course has been delayed (March 2021) due to recent school closings after a spike in Covid cases in Cambodia. When schools reopen, Garuna staff will begin the micro-lesson campaign.

To measure the impact of the course, staff will share their initial feedback after completing the course (Kirkpatrick Evaluation levels 1 & 2). They will also complete a survey after 3 weeks and 6 weeks of applying the content to their work, to measure behavior changes and share data (Kirkpatrick Evaluation levels 3 & 4).

Tools: Articulate Rise 360

Time: 3 hours

Client: Garuna Foundation

Collaborator: Subject Matter Experts from the Garuna Foundation

Challenge:

Create a resource that new and potential donors can use to learn more about the work of the Garuna Foundation in Cambodia. It must be easy to use and provide an overview of the need for education in Cambodia.

Solution:

Using a Rise 360 course, I was able to add minimal gamification to this learning experience. Users can scan a QR code at a marketing event or click a link from a marketing email to begin. They check their knowledge about life in Cambodia using a true or false game, find Cambodia on a map, and then discover how the Garuna Foundation is providing education to rural Cambodian families. Since most recruiting events are at schools and churches, this client wanted a tone of curiosity and fun.

Results:

This resource has not yet been shared with potential and existing donors (Feb 2021).
